Mechanism of Action
Ceftriaxone inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, resulting in the death of susceptible bacteria. It is highly effective against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
Indications / Uses
Used for the treatment of bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory tract infections
- Pneumonia
- Urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Typhoid fever
- Septicemia (blood infections)
- Meningitis
- Gonorrhea
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Surgical prophylaxis
Spectrum of Activity
Effective against:
- Escherichia coli
- Klebsiella species
- Proteus species
- Salmonella typhi
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Haemophilus influenzae
Dosage and Administration
- Route: Intramuscular (IM) or Intravenous (IV)
- Typical adult dosage: 1–2 g once daily, depending on severity of infection
- Higher doses may be used in severe infections under medical supervision
Reconstitution
Reconstitute with:
- Sterile Water for Injection
- Lidocaine (for IM use only, as prescribed)

Serious Adverse Effects
- Allergic reactions
- Severe diarrhea (Clostridioides difficile-associated)

- Neonates receiving calcium-containing IV solutions
